Why Was A Chinese Marathon Runner Disqualified From Race?

Disqualifications happen in sports. Maybe you weren't wearing the appropriate attire. Perhaps you didn't pass a drug test. Why was a Chinese marathon runner disqualified from a race?

Uncle Chen, known as the 'Smoking Brother,' completed the Xiamen Marathon in an impressive 3 hours and 33 minutes. However, he was disqualified for 'smoking on the track,' according to Daily Mail.

I understand that it may affect runners behind your or around you, that would be unfortunate. However, the man definitely deserves his flowers. Smoking often keeps people from running at all. It could be a choice, or they physically can't run a marathon because of smoking and the side effects. That didn't stop Uncle Chen!

In video and photos from the race, you can see Chen smoking a cigarette while running. Nobody around him appears to be bothered or even really notice what he's doing. There are even pictures of him getting his dart out of the box while running. He didn't even stop to light up! Who is this guy?

Per Daily Mail, the Xiamen Marathon Committee issued a statement saying, "Uncivilized behavior from runners such as open defecation, smoking, or trampling on flower beds or green spaces that affect the race and the safety of other runners will result in disqualification."

Hey, at least he was smoking! Can you imagine if he was defecating during the race? Now, that would be a problem!

Turns out, this isn't the first time Chen has made the news for something like this. Back in 2018, he made news for smoking during the Guangzhou Marathon, per Daily Mail. It looks like he found his thing!
