Online dating can be a challenge. This is especially true when you’re putting yourself out there for someone to swipe right or left on you based on a snapshot. According to a 2022 survey conducted by the data analytics company Singles Reports, roughly 80 percent of 18- to 54-year-olds surveyed have experienced emotional burnout as a result of online dating. Some experts even say that by identifying the signs of a mismatch sooner or spotting red flags on a dating profile, you might be able to avoid the feeling of fatigue altogether.

Best Life, a lifestyle magazine, collaborated with relationship experts to compile a list of dating profile red flags you should avoid.

Dating Profile Red Flags

At the top of their list is a dating profile that uses aggressive or negative language. When you read an online dating profile, it’s important to take note of not only the words on the page but also the tone of what’s written. According to one of their experts, you should pay attention to any aggressive tones or overly demanding language. They used the example of a long list of must-haves or deal-breakers on a dating profile.

The magazine points out that attraction plays a role in dating, especially in the early stages. But they do point out that if you notice someone’s dating profile emphasizes their physical preferences, this could be a red flag. "A profile focusing predominantly on physical attributes may indicate superficiality or an inability to engage in deeper emotional connections," explained one of their experts.

Another expert mentioned that a common but toxic trope on dating profiles is requesting a "drama-free" partner. They said that a profile that emphasizes “no drama” can ironically signal a "predisposition for dramatic situations." In an example, they stated that if a profile states, "Tired of drama and games," it may indicate the person’s recurring involvement in tumultuous relationships.

Other red flags on their list include: the profile lacks details, it idealizes their partner expectations and it contains conflicting information.
