Hypothetical: how much would someone owe you if you paid for their winning lotto ticket? Let’s say you lend them $10 for Powerball tickets, and they hit the massive $1 billion Jackpot…how much would they owe you?
That question was asked on Reddit and it’s now going viral. Before we get to what everyone else is saying, what do you think? How much would you feel like you are owed?
How Much Would Someone Owe You If You Paid For Their Winning Lottery Ticket?
It’s a difficult situation! You may feel like you’re entitled to half because you paid for it. Likewise, you might feel like it’s all yours since it was your money. Then, you could also just want your original $10 back. There are many options, but what would you expect back?
According to a Reddit poll, most people would simply expect their $10 back. I think that’s cutting yourself short! I would definitely try to get a little bit more from them. I’d need four-figures at the least. Hey, throw me $1,000 and we can call it good. Otherwise, I’m looking into small claims court or something. It was my money!
Surprisingly, many people would want nothing back or in exchange. I find that baffling. They couldn’t have had their winnings if it wasn’t for you! You are definitely owed something! Otherwise, I feel like they come off like a jerk. However, some would say I’m a jerk for expecting something in return. Well, if that’s the case then I would never lend anything to that friend or any friend ever again (not like they need it after winning a huge $1 billion sum, but still).
This is such a messy situation. That’s why if you lend the friend some money for a lotto ticket, get them to agree to the split before hand in writing! Maybe film a video or something. You’ve got to protect yourself in this situation!
So, what would you expect back? Check out the Reddit post below.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
