Some things are worth traveling to another state for. Maybe a trip with the family, to see a partner, or to enjoy a vacation. However, there’s something else we might have to add to that list: to fight a fellow gamer. Gaming culture is famously toxic and this is the latest example to prove that correct.
According to ABC News, a New Jersey man is now facing an attempted murder charge after allegedly flying to Florida to fight a fellow gamer with a hammer over an online dispute! People often hide on the internet and think they’re safe from any real life harm but things don’t always end up going that way!
The two men had never met in-person, per ABC News, that was the case until the suspect showed up at the victim’s home in Fernandina Beach. Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper held a press briefing announcing the charges in the case which he says is “a weird one” that started with an online altercation, per ABC News.

ABC News reports that 20-year-old Edward Kang allegedly gained entry into the victim’s home through an unlocked door and attacked him with a hammer while wearing all-black clothes, gloves, and a mask when the victim got up to use the bathroom while gaming. The two got into a fight and the victim and his step father (who had reportedly heard the fight breaking out in his home and came to help) were able to disarm the suspect and restrain him until law enforcement arrived, per ABC News.
The victim was taken to the hospital to treat his injuries which were severe. However, he has since been released from the hospital. Kang has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary. Those charges may end up being upgraded as the investigation is still underway. Kang reportedly said the victim is a “bad person online” and asked officers how much jail time you get for breaking and entering and assault. To which he was told by Leeper, “it will be a long time before you play video games,” per ABC News.
