24-Foot Shark Found On Scotland Beach
According to The New York Post, the carcass of the 24-foot shark found on a Scotland beach has been identified as a basking shark which are the second-largest living fish in the sea behind only the Whale Shark. Scuba.com says Whale Sharks can grow up to 42 feet long and weigh up to 47,000 pounds. The website says Basking Sharks can grow up to 40 feet and generally weigh around 11,400 pounds. That’s huge! Thankfully, Basking Sharks are considered non-aggressive and are harmless to human, unlike these 5 animals here.
The Basking Shark was reportedly found in the waters off Maidens Beach in Scotland on Sunday, June 30th. Witnesses first thought it was a whale but animal research and rescue groups who responded at the scene were able to properly identify it as a Basking Shark. Those in the area initially couldn’t tell if the shark was alive or dead, per The New York Post. Sadly, they discovered it was deceased by the time they got to it.
Yolanda McCall was on site when it happened and tells What’s The Jam, “It was tangled in a long loop of rope, in its mouth, and caught around its tail…maybe it got tired trying to free itself.” It’s a sad scene to see. Sure, sharks are giant and scary. However, it’s still heartbreaking to see any creature like this. You can only hope it didn’t suffer.
Unfortunately, sea life getting stuck in ropes, plastic, and other debris is more common than we’d like it to be. Recently, there was a video circulating the internet of a Humpback Whale who had to be rescued after getting stuck in Buoy Ropes.
