Did An Illinois Man Steal A Car Because Of A Bag Of Fritos?

Did a man steal a car because of a bag of Fritos? That's what he told law enforcement after he was apprehended!

Personally, I find Fritos to be the least preferred member of the "-itos" family. I'd much rather steal a car over Cheetos, Doritos, or even Tostitos. However, this Illinois man seems to feel a bit differently. At least that's what he's saying.

It can be hard to resist delicious chips and snack foods. You know what they say, once you have one it's impossible to stop there. Nobody has just one single chip, it's nearly impossible! However, that urge typically comes once you've started eating the snack. Not once you see a bag sitting on the seat of a car!

According to Lake & McHenry County Scanner, a man told law enforcement that he saw a bag of Fritos sitting on a car's seat while high on drugs which lured him to steal the vehicle. It sounds like he then went on to burglarize several vehicles in the Ingleside area. Problems were discovered when a man returned to his car at CrossPoint Church in Ingleside when he notcied his wallet containing $400 in cash and his credit cards along with several important documents were missing, per Lake & McHenry County Scanner.

That victim was later contacted by his bank about suspicious activity on his account. Video from the stores where the suspect was making purchases revealed 46-year-old Shawn M. Johnson of Richmond, per Lake & McHenry County Scanner. He was spotted using the card at several locations, including a McDonald's. He was later apprehended in Wisconsin and admitted to being the one in the video and to stealing the pickup truck.

According to Lake & McHenry County Scanner, he was walking around when he saw a bag of Fritos on the front seat of the pickup so he opened the door, discovered the keys still inside, and stole the vehicle. Johnson was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary, 2 counts of identity theft, and unlawful possession of an identification card. To make matters worse, at the time he was already on pre-trial release in Lake County for 2 similar cases. His pre-trial release has since been revoked and remanded to the Lake County Jail.
