Did A Man Stab Another Over A Peanut Butter And Jelly?
Few sandwiches match the peanut butter and jelly. It’s delicious but also incredibly simple and you usually have all the ingredients you need at home. You don’t need to cook up any meat, heat anything, or do anything fancy. Smear the peanut butter on some bread, put jelly on the other side, cut, and you’re good to go! Of course, you have to remember to clean up after yourself. It can be a bit messy dealing with the peanut butter jar and jelly. It sounds like that’s where the issue started between these 2 guys in DeKalb, Illinois.
According to Shaw Local, 23-year-old Javaughn J. Owens has been charged with 1st-degree attempted murder after he reportedly stabbed another man with a butter knife during an argument over a PB&J sandwich! If convicted, he could face up to 30 years behind bars or an extended sentence of 60 years! That’s a lot of time in jail and all over a simple sandwich. Via Shaw Local, Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery said, “The defendant’s only 23 years old and now has pleaded guilty to two crimes of violence and he has three crimes of violence pending. All occurred within 18 months. The stab wounds the victim received were sufficiently serious that he had to be transferred from a local hospital to a Chicago hospital to be treated.”
A witness tells law enforcement that Owens and the other man were arguing over the PB&J sandwich and how the victim wasn’t cleaning up after themselves so she tried to place herself between the 2 men to de-escalate things but Owens pulled out a butter knife and swung it over her shoulder striking the other man, per Shaw Local. The victim reportedly suffered lacerations to the left side of his hip, lower left back, right armpit, back of his right shoulder bone and the right side of his collar bone, per Shaw Local. One of the stab wounds even punctured an intestine according to reports. Owens has a lengthy criminal history and is expected to be back in court on October 21st. His lawyer is saying that he might have been acting in self-defense. You can see his mugshot provided by the DeKalb County Jail below.
