Grandma Carried Down Mountain After Breaking Her Leg
Going for a hike in Washington sounds like it would be beautiful! You can have a panoramic view of cliffs, beautiful trees, and endless nature. However, just because it can be beautiful doesn’t mean it won’t be dangerous. Hiking can be an incredibly dangerous activity if you happen to injure yourself or get lost. Breaking your leg on a mountain? That would definitely be a problem because helicopters can’t always access areas to rescue you and bring you to safety. You’re either on your own, or relying on another person to help you. Thankfully, she did.
According to The New York Post, Ursula Bannister is an experienced hiker who ran into some trouble on a 3.1 mile hike to High Rock Lookout, which is a nice viewpoint near Ashford, Washington–the place where her mother’s ashes are spread. When she made it to the summit, she reportedly got a photo and stepped in a hole and tumbled–breaking her leg in 3 places! You don’t want that to happen while on a solo hike! She says she immediately knew she broke her leg and it was going to be an issue.
Lucky for her, US Air Force Airman FIrst Class Troy May was hiking with his fiancee and friend when they happened to hear her cries for help. They were told it would be 4-5 hours until rescue crews could reach them so the 20-year-old Airman decided to take matters into his own hands–or shoulders, really. He tells The New York Post, “I knew I was capable of carrying her down. I really didn’t make much of a decision, I just knew I needed to carry her down if I could.” He seems like a big strong dude who could do it! She would have been in trouble if it was me hiking by at that time–there’s no way I could have done it!
They did their best to distract her from her pain while they brought her down the mountain–remember it’s a broken leg in 3 places! That has to really really hurt. In the end, she had to have 11 screws and a titanium plate in her leg, per The New York Post. Good on him for stepping up and doing that! Not everyone would be able to and it’s impressive he was willing to both mentally and physically. He was given an Achievement Medal from the Air Force for his heroic action.
