Did an Arkansas couple try to sell their baby for beer? That’s what’s being alleged and now they’re both facing several felony charges.
This is one of those stories that just make you feel sick to your stomach. It’s hard to believe that there are people like this out there, but there are many more than we’d like to believe. This happened in Benton County, Arkansas.
Did An Arkansas Couple Try To Sell Their Baby For Beer?
These 2 could be some of the worst parents out there. It sounds like something you’d see on TV or in a movie from some degenerate parents, but sadly this is all too real it sounds like. I just can’t wrap my head around what would make you want to do this and how you’d think it’s okay and not a major problem.
According to WREG, 21-year-old Darien Urban and 20-year-old Shalene Ehlers were arrested for trying to sell their 2-month-old baby for a 6-pack of beer and a $1,000 cashier’s check. Now, they’re both facing felony charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and attempting to negotiate the relinquishment of a minor for adoption. Law enforcement was reportedly alerted to what was happening by the manager of the Hide Away Campground. Witnesses say the two, who are engaged, wrote a letter granting custody of their baby to Cody Martin in exchange for money. According to WREG, the letter they both signed included a disclaimer saying, “there will be no changing y’all two’s minds and to never contact again.” Not the typical wording you’d expect to see in a legal document.
When police arrived, they realized the baby needed medical attention and was taken to the Children’s Hospital for an evaluation. According to WREG, witnesses say Ricky Crawford who’s a resident at the campground had visited the couple earlier and offered to take the baby for the night in exchange for several cans of beer. Crawford was later interviewed by police and appeared to be heavily intoxicated, per WREG. It’s reported he had slurred speech and trouble with his balance. He confirmed to police that he had taken the baby from Urban and Ehlers and brought the child to Martin.
The couple reportedly never received their payments. Urban was released on bond and Ehlers remains in custody at the Benton County Jail. You can see both of their mugshots provided by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office below.
