It sounds pretty gross though, doesn't it? Just going to down on an entire wedge of Parmesan cheese? Gross! However, it might be worth it if you're looking to add more protein to your diet! However, it does still have a lot of fat and sodium so it's not all benefits. This has been trending lately thanks to TikTok. People are all over the app eating bricks of Parmesan cheese like they're apples! Would you try it for some extra protein? I think I'd rather find another way. Check out an example below that was shared on TikTok.
Snacking On Parmesan A New Protein Hack?
According to Food & Wine, Parmigiano Reggiano contains about 10 grams of protein per ounce or 33 grams of protein per 3 ounces. If you're looking for a quick fix it might be a good start! However, it won't do everything on its own.
Madelyn Varela, a cheesemonger and former cheesemaker, tells Food & Wine, "Parmigiano Reggiano only contains three ingredients: milk, rennet, and salt. The star of the show--the milk--is going to be where all of the protein comes from."
Parmesan not your thing? Food & Wine says Swiss, cheddar, part-skin mozzarella, cottage cheese, and ricotta are also rich in protein. Just check out the nutrition labels if you're curious.
Think you might start doing this? I don't think I will be.
