A Boston man is being hailed as a hero after rescuing a blind woman from an apartment fire! It's true not all heroes wear capes.

If you were to see a fire...would you avoid it or run towards it? Honestly, I feel like many of us would probably stay far from it. Sure, we'd call authorities and professionals but it's difficult to imagine me running into that fire. One Boston man can't say the same. He ran into an apartment fire and was able to save a blind woman from near certain death. It happened in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

According to CBS News, there was a fire on the second-floor of an apartment building where Geneva Fuller lived and she woke up one morning and smelled smoke. Her son, Keith Patterson, tells CBS News, "She's blind, so she really didn't know what was going on. She had to go by her senses of hearing and smelling." She was able to activate her Life Alert which alerted crews to the scene who saw the smoke and flames at the apartment.

However, by the time they arrived someone else had already taken action. That's her neighbor Socrate Joseph. CBS News reports Joseph knew his blind neighbor might be trapped or in trouble so he ran back upstairs, grabbed his phone to use as a flashlight, and went down looking for her. Eventually, he found her and was able to take her hand and guide her to safety. How amazing is that?

Now, the apartment is boarded up and a total loss which leaves Joseph homeless at the moment but he's finding peace knowing he did the right thing. Geneva did suffer from smoke inhalation and will be monitored at the hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Everyone needs a neighbor like Socrate!

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
