According to FOX 59, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to W. Michigan St. after a report of a theft in progress at Family Dollar. Shortly after, gunshots were heard and there was a report of a man shot in the butt. Officers spoke to a witness who described the shooter and their vehicle.
After going back to the Family Dollar, officers saw the vehicle and the Family Dollar employees that the witness described. The 2 employees ended up being engaged and said they needed the stolen merchandise back. That's when Stepp admitted to finding the man and firing a warning shot and then was hit by a second shot that was fired. Stepp ended up being detained and his fiancée was released.
The investigation remains ongoing. You can't be the victim of the crime and end up getting arrested yourself! That's why some stores have policies that you don't chase down thieves. Let law enforcement do their jobs and handle it themselves. There's often no need for an employee vigilante.
