Personally, if I don't get my 8 hours of sleep every night I become grumpy and I'm not myself. If I were to go one night without getting quality sleep, my entire week would be thrown off. Can you image going nearly 2 years without achieving that unconscious state? It would drive you mad! Unfortunately, that's the reality for British train driver Oliver Alvis. 32-year-old Alvis tried to go to sleep in December 2023 but was never able to--and hasn't been able to sleep since! Weird Darkness recently did a deep dive into his unique condition.
British Train Driver Hasn't Slept In Nearly 2 Years
If you are unable to sleep for one night, it happens. Maybe you're stressed, maybe you ate something you shouldn't have, maybe you had too much caffeine--there are endless possibilities but you expect to be able to fall asleep that next night for sure. But that didn't happen for him, again, again, and again.
It sounds like it's as unpleasant of an experience as you'd think it would be. Weird Darkness says Oliver describes his body as feeling like it burns from the inside. He says it feels heavy and his eyes feel like they're melting out of his skull.
He's been going to the hospital and doctors trying to figure out what's going on but sounds like there hasn't been much luck. Some suggest relaxation techniques and another doctor called him delusional, per Weird Darkness.
