A California woman named Isis is fighting with the DMV to keep her license plate that reads 'I AM ISIS.' It's easy to see how it could be problematic--but it's her name!

Should she be able to keep the license plate? What do you think about this? It is her legal name and it's easy for her to prove, but not every driver out there on the road would know that it's her name and she's not actually part of the terrorist organization. It could cause some confusion, I get that. According to KCRA, Isis Wharton applied for the plate in 2022 and the DMV approved it. However, now she's been told that she can't have it anymore. She's fighting saying that the plate should be protected under the First Amendment. What say you?

According to KCRA, the California DMV sent her a letter reading, "Dear Isis, the Department of Motor Vehicles has reviewed its records, and it was determined that personalized license plates 'I AM ISIS' assigned to your 2021 Kia contain a configuration of letters/ and or numbers that are non-compliant with the requirements of Title 13."

Wharton says she's paid the renewal fee for 3 years to keep the license plate and it hasn't been a problem before. All of the sudden, there's an issue. The DMV says the plate violates Section 206 of the California Code of Regulations which don't allow anything illegal or violent on the plates and I guess you could consider Isis to be violent...if you're not considering that it's her name.

Wharton tells KCRA, "I'm proud of my name. I'm proud that it's on my car. And I feel like driving around. It looks cool." She now has until September 25th to request a hearing which she is now working on drafting.

What do you think? Should she be able to keep the plate?

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
