Have you heard about this alleged Holiday Sex Spike that happens during Christmas? Turns out, it's a real thing! Maybe it is the most wonderful time of the year, afterall.

Ah, the holidays. Time for family get-togethers, holiday movies, work parties, and lots and lots of sex. With all of that happening over the holidays, things can tend to get stressful. That means people need to find a way to relax a little bit and unwind. There's already enough drinking over the holidays, so people might need something new and fresh to help kick the winter blues. It sounds like many people turn to sex. Michael Salas, a licensed professional counselor, tells The New York Post, "Holidays amplify everything that already exists beneath the surface. For many people, sex becomes a way to cope with anxiety, loneliness or emotional overload rather than a reflection of genuine desire."

Yes--The 'Holiday Sex Spike' Is Real

According to The New York Post, The American Psychiatric Association determined that 41% of folks in the US anticipate experiencing more stress related to the holidays this year compared to in 2024. It's understandable with economics, family drama, and more. Experts say that people turn to sex instead of having a conversation or talking about things.

While it might provide some temporary relief, it sounds like you shouldn't rely on sex to cure your stress. At least not by itself. Salas tells The New York Post, "When sex becomes the primary way someone regulates stress or self-worth, it can mask deeper emotional needs. That's when people feel confused afterward--closer [to one another] in the moment, but more disconnected later."

Happy holidays! Enjoy that spike! Read more from The New York Post here.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
