Man With A Machete Tased And Shot In California Grocery Store
A man with a machete was tased and shot in a California grocery store. It took a lot to bring him down!
The incident happened in Thousand Oak’s Newbury Park area and bodycam video was captured and released by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. It sounds like deputies were originally dispatched to a domestic disturbance call involving a white male at the Palm Garden Hotel on Ventu Park Road near 6:30am back on October 24th. While on their way to the call, deputies learned that the man had allegedly used the machete to strike a truck and entered a Ralphs grocery store, per KTLA. How scary would that be to see?

In the surveillance video released by the Sheriff’s Department shows the man walking through the store’s sliding doors with the weapon in hand as a customer back away (smart decision) and positions a shopping cart between them. When the deputies arrived on scene, they encountered the man outside of the store still armed with the machete and he was not compliant with their demands. That’s when they initially used a Taser to try to disable the man with a machete but it was ineffective and then the man ran into another business that had several employees and customers in there. Again, that would be incredibly scary to see while out shopping!
VCSO Sheriff James Fryhoff tells KTLA, “The suspect ran into the business holding the machete advancing towards an employee in a threatening manner and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.” After the shooting, the suspect reportedly threw the machete at the deputies but they still rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. Per KTLA, the suspect has been identified as 50-year-old Joseph Emans was then transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. KTLA says Emans allegedly used the machete to break a window during the earlier disturbance that they were called about at the hotel and intentionally lit his vehicle on fire. Emans also reportedly assaulted a man with the machete causing a minor injury at a nearby 76 gas station.
KTLA reports that the man with a machete has been charged with 6 crimes including arson of property of another, vandalism over $400, attempted carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer and resist, obstruct, and delay of a peace officer. You don’t want to run into a man with a machete while out running your errands!
