Hearing the song “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas brings back lots of memories of Supernatural‘s Sam and Dean Winchester, Bobby, Castiel, Crowley, Charlie, Garth, Jack and the other characters that graced the screen of Supernatural.

Supernatural is a TV show created by Eric Kripke that tells the story of two brothers who grew up as hunters of supernatural beings. Their mother died in Season 1 leading to their father hunting for the “thing” that killed her and raising their sons as hunters. It’s the longest-running live-action fantasy TV series; it lasted 15 seasons. It is one of the shows with the most loyal fans; they call themselves “hunters.”

Aside from the interesting plots, there are several reasons why Supernatural enjoyed that longevity and still enjoys a cult following.

1. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki

Who wouldn’t want to watch a show with not just one, but two gorgeous leads? Seeing the two of them fully clothed and shirtless (happens a lot) is enough to get any fan girl hooked. Throw in ghost and monster hunting, and you’d get any geek, fantasy and supernatural fans addicted to the show.

2. No Two Episodes of Supernatural Are the Same

The show starts with the brothers looking for their missing father as they travel across the country helping people dealing with supernatural beings. No two episodes are the same as they explore different mythologies and folklore, you’ll even find yourself excited to learn which supernatural being they’ll fight next episode.

3. The Supporting Characters

The show wouldn’t last that long if it had only been about the brothers (although, if that had been the case, I’d still probably watch it). It introduced several characters that made the show more interesting. These characters include:

Hunters: Like Sam and Dean Winchester and their father John, there is Bobby, who is like their surrogate father because John is not winning any Father of the Year awards. Then there is Charlie, an IT whiz who also got looped into the hunting life, Jo and Ellen Harvelle who owned a bar frequented by other hunters.

Angels: Of course, we have Castiel, played by Misha Collins, who became a fan favorite and was only supposed to appear in three episodes. But he became a regular cast member from Season 9 to 15. Then, there is Metatron who united the fandom in considering him as the show’s worst villain (yes, even worse than Lucifer). And we can’t forget Anna who all Dean fans would want to be (if you know, you know).

Demons: The most famous one in the show is Crowley who dubbed Sam “Moose” and Dean “Squirrel.” Then there is Ruby who all Sam fans would want to be (in “reel” and real life). We also have Meg, who taught Castiel about the pizza man, and of course, Lucifer who didn’t need any introduction.

Other supernatural beings: Since the show deals with the hunters fighting supernatural beings and creatures, they serve as the show’s villains and antagonists. Featured creatures include Wendigo, phantom traveler, woman in white, daeva, jinn, vampires, werewolves, wraiths, etc.

Jack Kline: A special character that identifies as a hunter, but is technically a Nephilim, sired by Lucifer himself.

4. The Soundtrack

Before watching this show, I never listened to AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, or Led Zeppelin. But thanks to this show, it opened my ears to a different genre I now enjoy. Plus, the songs used in every episode are just “Chef’s Kiss.” Although hearing “Carry On Wayward Son” is bittersweet since it’s frequently used during season finales.

  • Smells Like Dean Winchester Candle

Ever wondered what Dean Winchester smells like? Now, you can stop wondering! This candle is made from 100% soy wax and will burn for 40+ hours, which is only a small fraction of how long our love for Dean has been burning. But for a candle, that’s pretty good!

  • Chevy Impala and Dean Winchester Die-cast Figure

Now’s your chance to bring home Dean and Baby! Sadly, you can’t drive Baby and cuddle with Dean since they’re both miniature versions of the real thing. However, you can keep them on your desk and dream of the day Dean will drive by and whisk you away, not to “Hunt things,” but to eat pie.

  • Dean Funko

Seeing this Funko of Dean, I can’t help laughing because it perfectly captured Jensen Ackles’ bowlegs that’s a running gag every time the cast of Supernatural attends a comic convention.

No, it’s not a typo. It’s just Bobby’s term of endearment for his boys (fitting at times). This shirt comes in men’s and women’s sizes and different colors.

I think it’s obvious that I’m Dean’s girl, so I’m adding this shirt to this list, a reference to an episode from season 5.
