Angela Bassett To Receive Honorary Oscar
Angela Bassett will be receiving an honorary Oscar. The actress who has been nominated for the award twice will receive her first Oscar at the 2023 Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced Monday (June 26).
Bassett was first nominated for Best Actress Oscar in 1994 for her portrayal of the late Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It. Her second nomination was this year for Best Supporting Actress in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She made history with her Wakanda Forever nomination as she was the first woman and actor to receive an acting Oscar nomination for a Marvel film. The franchise has previously been nominated in technical categories including Visual Effects, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Costume Design, Production Design, Original Score, and Original Song.
Throughout her career, Bassett has played iconic roles in films such as Boyz n the Hood, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Malcolm X, and more. Bassett has also reprised her role as Queen Ramonda from Black Panther in three Marvel films. She’s also made several major roles on the small screen in FOX’s 9-1-1, American Horror Story, ER, and more.
This announcement comes after fans believed Bassett was of her Oscar nomination this year. The Best Supporting Actress Oscar went to Everything Everywhere All at Once actress Jamie Lee Curtis at the 2023 Oscars in March.

Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton are also 2023 Governors Award honorees. Michelle Statter, a Sundance Institute executive is set to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Mel Brooks lights up our hearts with his humor, and his legacy has made a lasting impact on every facet of entertainment. Carol Littleton’s career in film editing serves as a model for those who come after her. A pillar of the independent film community, Michelle Satter has played a vital role in the careers of countless filmmakers around the world.”
The 2023 Governors Awards will be held in Los Angeles on November 18 ahead of the 2024 Oscars ceremony in March.
