Guitars are meant to be picked. They are not intended to be picked apart. Does Machine Gun Kelly’s new razor blade shaped guitar promote self-harm?
Critics online are saying the guitar, that is shaped like a razor blade, could be impressionable on his young fans. Many people online are saying it glorifies cutting.
Does Machine Gun Kelly’s New Razor Blade Guitar Promote Self-Harm?
First, the guitar does look exactly like a razor blade. It has that same distinctive shape, and it’s obvious what it is upon looking at it. The problem? These razor blades are often used by individuals who intentionally cut themselves. Additionally, self-harm and cutting is already a common stereotype about the pop-punk/emo culture. That tends to be the type of crowd MGK draws, which complicates the issue.
The rapper/rocker has had several custom guitars made. This one stands out as the most different and controversial. The guitar is made by Schecter. Schecter’s Instagram post announcing the guitar is filled with negative comments.
Some users were saying, “this ain’t it” while others showed their displeasure with GIFs, and user “guitar_max_carlisle” said, “looking sharp.” I didn’t miss the word play.
Machine Gun Kelly showed off the guitar at a recent show. According to TMZ, he told the audience the guitar is “kind of an ode to Tickets To My Downfall, the line on the title track and also an ode to my 20s and all the crazy times that I had.”
However, after hearing the response to the guitar he addressed the thought that it promotes cutting and self-harm by saying on i'll never explain my art, because true art is conversational and always up for interpretation, but i will say, most of you constantly interpret it wrong. and then blame me for your version of what you think my art is. ultimately im sad at how people perceive me in general. peace
