Synyster Gates Loosely Compares A7X to The Beatles
Synyster Gates shared an interesting analogy in relation to Avenged Sevenfold’s latest album, Life Is But A Dream, which came out in June.
The guitar explained in an interview with Metal Hammer how his parents’ favorite band is The Beatles. However, his mom isn’t a fan of their work after Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Meanwhile, his dad isn’t a fan of their work pre-Sgt. Pepper’s. Similar to how that album divided his parents’ love for the Beatles, Gates thinks Life Is But A Dream will divide A7X fans.
“So, for my mom, Sgt. Pepper’s was the death of The Beatles, and I think for a lot of people this is the death of Avenged Sevenfold,” said Gates. “But for a lot of other people, it’s a birth. The birth of a different band.”
How Psychedelics Influences A7X’s Life Is But A Dream
Life Is But A Dream, did, in fact, divide fans a bit, since the album was sonically different from every other A7X album. A reason for that is due to psychedelic drugs, particularly 5-MeO-DMT, that Gates and singer M. Shadows were experimenting with.
Shadows touched on this on the March 2023 episode of the band’s TRAX podcast. The singer and guitarist took a variety of things away from their trips. However, the main takeaway was this desire not to be afraid to step outside of their rock/metal comfort zones.
Shadows said, in part, “… It was basically this psychedelic experience that took us into this, ‘Be bold. Don’t do psychedelics and make Pink Floyd. No, do your own thing and make your own stamp.'”
