Former Track Coach Sentenced 5 Years For Nude Photo Scam
Steve Waithe has been sentenced to 5 years in prison, along with 3 years of supervised release for the crimes. 25 NEWS reports Waithe pleaded guilty to 12 counts of wire fraud, cyberstalking, and computer fraud after tricking dozens of women across the country using fake social media and email accounts to get women to send him compromising photos.
According to 25 NEWS, acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy said, “This defendant’s conduct is deplorable. He exploited his trusted role as a coach to college athletes to engage in a sextortion campaign that has left a trail of emotional devastation in its wake. We stand by the courageous victims who came forward and help this Office hold Mr. Waithe accountable.”
25 NEWS reports Waithe would scam Northeastern track and field athletes through fake accounts saying he found nude photos of them online and if they sent him more, he could do a “reverse image search” and remove them from the internet. That was not the case. It went even further by encouraging women to participate in made up body development studies. 25 NEWS says he also sent harassing and intimidating messages to a victim and her boyfriend including explicit photos he had stolen from the victim’s phone.
It’s appalling to see someone in a position like that take advantage of these young athletes. Thankfully, he won’t be able to do anything like this again as he’s been prohibited from taking any jobs where he can serve as a coach, teacher, mentor, or similar role involving women and girls.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
