As you see it play out on video, you can’t help but feel the panic that the police officer must have been going through. It very well could have ended up like the wife in the movie Signs where she got pinned between a car and a tree. It didn’t end up going well for her. However, the police officer was able to avoid serious injury.
Witness video shared with WCVB shows 2 men fighting with one striking another with a large object. Officers respond to the scene and as an officer exits his vehicle, you can see it start to roll away placing the officer between a car and that car that’s moving. Essentially, he’s a human shield for the stationary vehicle. Alma Martinez, the witness who shared the video, tells WCVB, “His body shielded the other car. I’m surprised he’s OK, he looked fine.”
Another witness, Oscar Sanchez, tells WCVB, “I saw the car going. As soon as I saw that it stopped, that’s when I just ran and helped him out. He gave me the key, I jumped in the car and put it in reserve and that was it.” Thankfully he was there and jumped into action! Not everyone would have been willing to do that. Also, good on the officer for handing over the keys to help himself out. I’m not sure if that goes against protocol or anything but it saved him from further injury. The kind Samaritan could have easily taken off with the patrol car, but chose to help instead.
Additionally, the fight they were initially addressing was broken up and 37-year-old Anthony Watson was placed under arrest and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. Now, Worcester Police is investigating what caused the vehicle to continue rolling once the officer exited. It sounds like the officer wasn’t seriously injured during the incident and both of the vehicles were not damaged either. You can see the police officer pinned in the viral video for yourself below.
