Virginia Thief Arrested During ‘Shop With A Cop’ Event At Walmart

A Virginia man was arrested for stealing from a Walmart during a 'Shop With A Cop Event.' Talk about bad timing!

It's never smart to steal from Walmart. They're one of the biggest companies in the country, and world, and they have the technology to catch you. Your chances of getting away with any shoplifting or stealing from Walmart decrease if you happen to try to steal things during a Shop With A Cop event at the store. Well, that's what happened to one man in Virginia who reportedly tried to steal $1,400 worth of stuff from Walmart during a Shop With A Cop Event. It was a horrible idea and now he's paying the consequences for it.

According to WTVR, dozens of Chesterfield County police officers and sheriff's deputies were at the IronBridge Road Walmart on Sunday for a Shop With A Cop event, which is a holiday tradition where law enforcement helps children pick out presents. It's a great thing that the community does and of course some Grinch had to try to spoil it all.

Chesterfield County Police Lt. James Lamb tells WTVR, "A member of the staff at Walmart came up to us and informed us they had a shoplifting in progress. Between the sheriff's department and police officers we had about 50 uniform personnel at the store." Can you imagine shoplifting and then being greeted by 50 officers in uniform when you tried to leave? That would be a scary sight. It sounds like security footage in the store showed a man concealing merchandise and attempting to leave the store but he was apprehended by the alerted officers when he tried to escape out of the back of the store.

According to WTVR, that man was identified as 32-year-old Hector D. Velazquez Maldonado of Chesterfield County. It sounds like even the officers were shocked that he tried to pull this off during a Shop With A Cop event. Lamb tells WTVR, "We had 30-40 marked patrol cars in the parking lot. When we found his vehicle, it was facing where our cars were parked, so he would have had to see them. It seems like it just didn't matter to him." How can you see all of those cop cars outside the Walmart and still go ahead with the plan? You'd think a single patrol car would be enough to scare off a potential thief let alone 30-40 of them!

Maldonado reportedly had active warrants for failure to appear in court on a previous shoplifting charge in addition to other open larceny cases in the county. Now, he's facing a felony charge of grand larceny after police say he attempted to steal nearly $1,400 worth of items inside the Walmart.
