A batch of watermelon that was shipped to a store in Maine had come in contact with some bacteria that is causing some melons to start foaming and then eventually EXPLODE!
According to this report, the natural fructose sugar in the watermelon combined with the excessive heat we are experiencing this year and the bacteria have caused many watermelons to start foaming. If you see a foaming watermelon be sure to keep your distance.
The fermenting process produces gases that then can cause the melon to explode.
Now if you encounter a foaming watermelon do NOT eat it. It is a high risk for foodborne illness.
