6 Alleged Florida Fraudsters Arrested For Grandparent Scams
Grandparent Scams are on the rise and are something you need to discuss with Seniors in your life. Thankfully, some alleged fraudsters were just busted in Florida.
There are so many scams out there that you’ve been warned about on Dave & Chuck The Freak. One of the most common are Grandparent Scams where suspects contact seniors claiming to be the lawyer of a grandchild who’s in trouble. Naturally, many Seniors want to help their family so they’ll give the money. However, caution is needed! Here’s more on the recent bust.
Florida Fraudsters Allegedly Arrested For Grandparent Scams
According to Fox Business, 6 alleged fraudsters were arrested in Florida for stealing roughly $250,000 from senior citizens across the state. The arrests were announced by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody on Monday.
Like other Grandparent Scams, the suspects reached out to Senior Citizens claiming to be one of their grandparent’s lawyers in need of bail money for one of their grandchildren. Then, the seniors would send them money. This is an incredibly popular scam that you need to make sure your loved ones are aware of. Maybe you need to have a safe word or password in case something like this ever does actually happen.
Fox Business reports the 6 suspects: Jairo Izquierdo, Gennesis Castro, Wendy Angelina Ortiz, Ada Tido, Wandy Castro, and Olfa Cornielle have all been charged with multiple first-degree felonies including organized scheme to defraud, grand theft and criminal use of personal identification.
In a news release, Moody said, “These fraudsters know that most grandparents would do anything to help a grandchild in need, and through a convincing imposter scheme they used fear and family to extort Florida seniors–stealing nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Working with our great law enforcement partners in South Florida, we were able to shut down this far-reaching grandparent scheme and now 6 fraudsters will have to answer for their crimes.”
It’s disgusting for these people to target Seniors who are extremely vulnerable in a situation like this. Again, plan ahead so this doesn’t happen to your family. You can see a couple of their mugshots below!
