Diver Entangled In Boat Propeller Leads To Arrest Of Florida Man
A Florida man has been arrested after a diver was fatally entangled in a boat propeller. He’s now facing charges of seaman’s manslaughter.
Seaman’s manslaughter is a charge I have never heard of, but apparently it’s a real thing. It’s merely only one of the charges an Ocala man is facing after a diver reportedly became entangled in his boat propeller leading to his death. It sounds like his boat “Southern Comfort” was anything but!
What Happened To The Diver Entangled In A Boat Propeller?
Whether you’re a professional fisherman, someone who gives tours on the water, or someone who borrows their friend’s boat on occasion to go for a swim–anybody who has spent time near a boat knows that propellers can be dangerous. You want to make sure they’re off before you dive into the water or try to climb up the ladder to get back into the boat.
According to Click Orlando, 49-year-old Dustin Sean McCabe appeared in court last week after being charged with several crimes related to his scuba charter business, including the seaman’s manslaughter charge. Reports say he told the U.S. Coast Guard that his boat “Southern Comfort” was for recreational purposes, but he was actually using it to conduct paid scuba charters out of Palm Beach County, per Click Orlando. The outlet reports that McCabe took a couple out for a diving trip to Breaker’s Reef and that’s where the incident took place. Click Orlando reports that the couple, Sean Flynn and Mollie Ghiz-Flynn, resurfaced after finishing their dive and as they were swimming back towards the boat, McCabe reportedly put the boat in reverse causing them to get sucked under the boat with Ghiz-Flynn getting stuck in the moving propellers. You always hear warnings about that potentially happening and now it has.
Despite her husband and people on the boat’s efforts, they were unable to free Mollie from the propellers. A lawsuit has since been filed and says, “(Sean) watched in horror to the futile efforts to save his wife, who was declared dead by the time the vessel returned to the marina. Cause of death was determined to be ‘drowning’ with ‘chop wounds of the lower extremities’ as a significant contributing factor,” via Click Orlando. I feel like every person who drives a boat should know how dangerous that is! People can easily get trapped under if you miss your mark by even a little bit.
Now, McCabe is facing a long list of charges including a count of making false statements and 3 counts of wire fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 35 years behind bars. Flynn has since filed a lawsuit against McCabe. It would be horrible to witness something like that happen. You can see McCabe’s mugshot provided by the Ocala Police Department below.
