10-Year-Old In Minneapolis Charged After Driving Stolen Car Near A Playground
A 10-year-old boy in Minneapolis has been charged after driving a stolen car near a playground! This could have ended much worse.
Thankfully, nobody was hurt during the incident outside Nellie Stone Johnson School in North Minneapolis. However, it’s also not the first time this kid has been arrested–and he’s only 10-years-old! Clearly, there’s a lot to unpack here.
Did A 10-Year-Old Drive A Stolen Car Near A Playground?
The incident happened back on September 20th and was caught on video. It happened outside of a local school while the playground was crowded. Nobody was hurt but they really could have been. This would be a scary sight to witness.
According to ABC 7 NY, the 10-year-old boy was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center and is his 3rd arrest and is a suspect in a dozen other cases ranging from auto theft to robbery to assault with a dangerous weapon. A reminder: he’s 10! How do you rack up that many arrests when you’re still that young? Police Chief Brian O’Hara tells ABC 7 NY, “It is unfathomable that a 10-year-old boy has been involved in this level of criminal activity without effective intervention. Prison is not an acceptable option for a 10-year-old boy. But the adults who can top this behavior going forward must act now to help this child and his family.” The family is reportedly cooperating and seeking help for their son to keep him or anyone else from being hurt or killed in the future.
A spokesperson for an attorney’s office tells ABC 7 NY, “We are facing an urgent crisis in our community related to a small group of children who are not competent to stand trial in the juvenile justice system, but who cannot safely be at home.” It sounds like crimes like this from younger suspects is on the rise in the area and presents several challenges to law enforcement and the community. Ramsey County Undersheriff Mike Martin tells ABC 7 NY, “We’re failing these kids. The criminal justice system no longer holds them accountable or provides meaningful intervention to them.” Some young juveniles are sent to MCF-Moorhead and MCF-Red Wing which are 2 of Minnesota’s top juvenile facilities. However, most of the time, the kids are sent home after being arrested and their home life might not be the best situation or environment for them. Hopefully the kid gets all the help he needs.
