The Inaugural ‘Florida Man Games’ Were A Massive Success
If you’ve been on the internet, you’re probably familiar with ‘Florida Man Stories.’ They are found all over the internet. Whenever there’s a headline about a wild arrest or an unbelievable crime or story…typically it ends up being in Florida. Thus, the proverbial Florida Man was born.
Dozens of individuals from all across Florida gathered together in tank tops and cutoff shorts to compete in games that are totally Florida. They competed in games like evading police and wrestling over beer, but like Olympic sports. Honestly, it doesn’t get any more Florida than that.
Thousands of people came out (and paid money to watch) the competition of a dozen teams in St. Augustine, Florida. Seriously, it was a huge event. Just check out this photo from The New York Times! The contests and shows were all inspired by real events from our country’s most unbelievable state.
According to The Orlando Sentinel, Hanky Spanky team captain Larry Donnelly said, “I have an absolute disregard for self-preservation. I will do anything. When I was in the military, I did a little alligator wrestling.” Yes! Larry is exactly the kind of guy you want to see competing at the Florida Man Games.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Donnelly trained for the games by biking with a second bike strapped to his back. Yup, that will do it. Gotta have that extra weight so when the real time comes you’ll feel even lighter and faster.
Other events at the games reportedly included sumo-style wrestling while holding pitchers of beer, running from the police while jumping fences, mud-filled pool duels, and more! This all sounds hilarious. Hopefully, it will be back for year 2 in 2025.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
